Green Brook Student Nominated for Governor's School

Prestigious program eyes Soumya Sodhakar for engineering and technology campus.

Four Watchung Hills Regional High School juniors—including Soumya Sodhakar, of Green Brook—have been nominated by the school’s supervisors of science and technology for appointment to the 2013 Governor’s School program. The elite program is a demanding summer residential experience which allows participants to enjoy college-level learning.

Alexander Rucker of Warren and Sodhakar have been nominated for the Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology; and Bryan Gerber and Charlotte Zuber, both of Warren, have been nominated for the Governor’s School in the Sciences, according to Vice-Principal Steven Searfoss.

The Governor’s School in the Sciences will be held at Drew University, in Madison, from July 4 to Aug. 3. The Governor’s School in Engineering is scheduled to be held at the Busch Campus of Rutgers University, Piscataway Township, from June 30 to July 26.

The Governor’s School was a concept developed by Gov. Tom Kean in 1963 for the purpose of encouraging and fostering excellence in education for talented achievers in all parts of the state in various categories.

At its zenith, there were as many as 600 participants in six schools (Public Issues, Environment, International Studies, Art have been eliminated) which provided an intensive period of study designed to provide enrichment, challenges and stimulating acknowledged specialists in their fields. Due to the state’s financial constraints, the number of schools, the length of the courses and the number of enrollees have diminished greatly.

The screening process is a rigorous one. Nominees are not only excellent students in their fields, but will also have supplied evidence of their work, letters of recommendation, personal essays, transcripts of their records and so on. The final hurdle is a personal interview with the director of the specific Governor’s School.

The Governor’s Schools have been shown to be a good investment for the future, not only for those who take part in the program, but for New Jersey’s growth as well.

Many former Governor’s School alumni have gone on to distinguished achievements in college and careers.
