Warriors Baseball Scores Extra Innings Victory Over Rutgers Prep

Danny Bongiorno hits 2 run walk off homer in ninth inning for the win

The Watchung Hills Warriors won their third game of the early 2013 season over Rutgers Prep with an extra innings walk-off home run to win 5-3. Rutgers Prep (2-2) The game played early Saturday morning was a pitcher's dual with Rutgers starter P.J. Strahm going eight innings giving up only 8 hits and 3 runs. Warrior hurler Joe Rocchietti held tough going seven innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits.  Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning to take it to the ninth.  In the top of the ninth, Warrior relief pitcher Christian Meyers gave up a walk to start the inning.  Rutgers used a sacrifice bunt to get the base-runner to second.  But Meyers followed it up with a strike out and he then got the next batter fly out to end the inning. Watchung Hills Alum Hewitt Wins 600th Game at Alma Mater's Expense

Hillsborough ends baseball team's state bid behind Watchung Hills Regional Hall of Famer.

There was something in the air.  Black clouds loomed with bright sunshine as the two teams took the field at Diamond Nation in Flemington.  Both teams knew the value of victory: one team gets to play another state game on Friday.  And the Raiders, still high off their Somerset County Championship win on Saturday, had one other goal: get coach Norm Hewitt, a 1965 Watchung Hills Regional graduate and 2009 Hall of Fame inductee, his 600th win. The action from the mound was terrific for both teams. Raider hurler Paul Mammino was stellar in the starting role going 6 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits, 4 walks and striking out 8 more.  His counterpart, Joe Rochietti went 7 2/3 innings giving up 7 hits, 3 runs and had 3 strike outs. Baseball Team Edges Out Hunterdon Central

BIg scores in the fourth and fifth innings seal victory.

Watchung Hills waited until the fourth inning to score, and took advantage of scoring opportunities in the fifth to secure a win over Hunterdon Central.

Watchung Hills Baseball Prepares for Season [VIDEO]

Strong senior squad ready to take the field.

As the warm weather has brought the signs of spring, so too the Watchung Hills High School baseball team gets ready for their season to begin. Coach Mario Diaz, in his 27th year at the helm, looks forward to the season.  "We have a lot of seniors that have played well together for a long time," Diaz said.  "I don't remember a spring with weather this good, we have been outside every day." ROSTER Season Opener The Warriors will begin the 2012 season at North Hunterdon on Tuesday April 3 at 3:45 p.m.
