American Express promotion benefits businesses and cardholders.
While Black Friday has been a day for major box stores, the day after has become a day to celebrate locally owned businesses. These local merchants offered deals of their own on Small Business Saturday. Customers who registered ahead of time for Small Business Saturday and spend more than $25 at participating stores will receive a $25 credit to their AMEX bill. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities.

Area shops roll out red carpet to welcome Black Friday shoppers while looking forward to Small Business Saturday.
Karen Thompson of Warren fled the Black Friday crush of the mall and the long line at the Vera Bradley store she was trying to enter when she remembered her morning email about sales at Apogee in downtown Basking Ridge. "There had to be 70 people in line," at the store at the mall, Thompson said. By contrast, in the small shop later on Friday morning, she was receiving personalized attention while browsing through what she said was the same selection. "It was a mob scene," Thompson said of her Friday morning trip to the mall. "Plus, it's good to support local businesses," she added. After leaving the fashion boutique, she said she was heading down South Finley Avenue to Down Cellar, a collectibles and crafts store also in Basking Ridge. …

There are plenty of small businesses in Watchung and Green Brook. Some of them may be places you and your family frequent, businesses that have been in town for as long as you can remember. And some may be your go-to places instead of national chains. Small business owner Linda Fuller is no stranger to starting a business from the ground up. In her recent interview with Patch Partners, a website connecting business owners to Patch in local communities, she offers insight into how she expanded her business’s services from just flowers to wine, beer and gourmet gift baskets at Lake Anne Florist in Reston, VA. Homework must be done first, she said. “Research what’s compatible with your own products and services, what the current trends are …

Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Green Brook and Watchung and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. …

Company positioning to capitalize on improving real estate market.
Looking for signs of an improving economy? If so, then look no further than plans being laid by New Jersey-based Capitol Lighting, which is seeking an unlimited number of sales people for retail and its expanding online sales. The 88-year old company sees a potential for growth as the real estate market and economy improve, and company President Eric Lebersfeld notes this is the time to be ready for any upswing. "We need the right people on the bus to help us grow—and it's not necessarily a finite number," he said. Lebersfeld said Capitol Lighting has pulled back as the real estate market declined in 2007-2009, which is causing some surprising possibilities now. "It gave us the opportunity to figure out how to work smarter, and work …

Governor's new gas plan and restrictions imposed by station owners results in slightly shorter waits in some places, same story in others.
At noon Saturday, Gov. Chris Christie's even-odd gas rationing mandate went into effect for 12 New Jersey counties, including Bergen, Essex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Warren. The result, in some cases, was modestly shorter gas lines than have been seen in the days since Sandy hit. Of course, other stations featured the same long lines and interminable waits that have dotted North Jersey in recent days.
