Gov. Christie: Seaside Heights Opening 'An Incredible Day for New Jersey'

Gov. Christie appeared at Seaside Heights boardwalk Friday to promote the Jersey Shore.

The Jersey Shore is officially open for summer, Gov. Chris Christie said as he spent Friday morning in Seaside Heights promoting tourism in New Jersey.  Early Friday, Christie appeared on NBC's Today Show, which broadcast its morning news program live from Seaside Heights. The governor later cut a ceremonial ribbon—a Guinness World Record at over five miles long—to officially declare the shore open.  "It's an incredible day for New Jersey," Christie said in remarks. "I'm so thrilled that this morning we're here with the whole country welcoming the Jersey Shore back." Hills Scholar-Athletes Earn Somerset Distinction

Andrew Gildenberg and Sarah Decker honored for commitment to studies and athletics.

Two members of Watchung Hills Regional High School’s Class of 2013 were among the 32 graduating seniors who were honored May 15 at the Somerset County Scholar-Athlete dinner. Andrew Gildenberg and Sarah Decker, accompanied by Principal George Alexis, were honored for their distinct accomplishments in the classroom and on the playing field. Gildenberg, who took a program heavy with Advanced Placement and honors courses, maintained a 4.5 grade point average. He was named to the National Spanish Honor Society and the National English Honor Society. The Warren resident was equally distinguished on the field. A four-year member of the football and basketball teams, he has earned three letters in each sport and served as captain for both teams …

New Child Porn Charge Could Mean 30 Years Prison for Convicted Child Abuser

Watchung man faces charges in Somerset, Warren and Morris counties after allegedly videotaping children in an amusement park bathroom and sexually assaulting minors.

As a new charge surfaced for a convicted child abuser from Watchung on Wednesday, 53-year-old Patrick Deck may be facing a combined more than 30 years in prison if now convicted of videotaping and sexually assaulting minors in addition to being in possession of child pornography. In the past year, Deck has been charged with child pornography and sexual assault of a minor in three jurisdictions in Warren, Morris and Somerset counties. On Wednesday he made an initial appearance on a one-count charge of child pornography possession after authorities said he was found to have three sexually-explicit images of young boys on his laptop computer. In August 2012, Deck appeared in court on charges of videotaping children urinating at the Land of …

Watchung Staff Honored as Teachers of the Year

Jennifer Marquis-Dursee and Susan Walsh were honored this year.

Two Watchung Hills teachers were honored for service Thursday as the board of education recognized them as teachers of the year. Grade one and two combination teacher Jennifer Marquis-Dursee and sixth and seventh grade language arts teacher Susan Walsh were chosen as teachers of the year. Bayberry and Valley View principal Mary Nunn said she has known Marquis-Dursee for many years as the Bayberry teacher was also a graduate of Watchung schools. "I am thrilled that the board and community members all helped select Jen as this year's recipient," she said. "She is the kind of teacher we are all looking for in Watchung." Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy. all they talk about is how the boardwalk areas are open but seaside north is a disaster area. the homeowners are still suffering from not getting paid by their insurance and FEMA rules not being finalized yet. Mantoloking is a disaster and is normandy beach. Homeowners are still rebuilding. But the news doesn't report this. It's as if everything is back to normal. What idiots!!!   more ›
