Valerie Fund Founders Honored With Seeds of Change Award
Sue and Ed Goldstein of Warren helped spearhead the opening of the state's first pediatric oncology facility in Summit in 1977.
A Warren couple who used the loss of their daughter to cancer as motivation to raise funds to open the first pediatric oncology facility in the state was honored by New Jersey Monthly as this year's recipients of their annual Seeds of Change Award.
Sue and Ed Goldstein, who spearheaded an effort to open the Valerie Fund Center at Overlook Hospital in Summit in 1977, received the award at a ceremony earlier this month, according to a report on MyCentralJersey.com. The award was created to recognize New Jersey residents who have made a difference.
The Goldsteins lost another daughter to breast cancer and dedicated the Stacy Goldstein Breast Cancer Center in Stacy's memory at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, in New Brunswick, where they also established fellowships in her name.
"There are a tremendous amount of great people who have given," Ed Goldstein told Patch last year. "We had a reason. But we can't do it alone. There are a lot of others who are doing it as a labor of love."
