College Board Recognizes 172 WHRHS Students' AP Test Scores

One-hundred and seventy-two Watchung Hills Regional High School students who took Advanced Placement (AP) Exams in May of 2012 have won distinction as “AP Scholars,” according to the College Board, creators and sponsors of the Advanced Placement program.

The program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school and to earn college credit, advanced placement in college course work, or both, for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the 1.9 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to earn an AP Scholar Award. 

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams. At Watchung Hills, 16 students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average score of 4 or higher (on a five-point scale) on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

There were 16 students in this category, with an average score of 4.68 These students are: Rohit Biswas, India Braver, Kevin Chen, Katherine Dong, Alan Gou, Priyanka Goyal, Sampson Ho, Michael Ma, Nikita Mishra, Shreyas Panchagnula, Daniel Rietze, Leon Santhakumar, Cathy Song, Kevin Wilson, Jessica Xu and Wesley Yiin.

The AP Scholar with Distinction designation is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least a 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Watchung Hills had 59 students in this category, with an average score of 4.38, They are: Neha Agrawal, Jackson Bahr, Ross Bernhaut, Ryan Bhattacharyya, Rohit Biswas, Marie Bonnar, Alyssa Braver, India Braver, Michael Briski, Matthew Carbone, Urvashi Chatterjee ,Kevin Chen, Michelle Costa, Jake Cunningham, Abhinav Dantuluri, Karan Deo, Katherine Dong, Kelsey Dreyer, Chris Felton, Alan Gou, Priyanka Goyal, Sampson Ho, Rohan Jadvani, Akash Kataskam, Joseph Kong.

The AP Scholar with Honor designation is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. There were 22 students in this category; their average score was 4.02. These students are: Sarah Basilion, Anderson Chan, Edward Chang, Woo Chang, Eleni Filippatos, Ari Goodman, Olivia Hampton, Nicole Ivan, Hao Yan Li, Sheree Liu, Logan Mendez, Hyo Kyung Park, Gregory Przbylski, Phillip Reytan, Anneka Schechter, Steven Scibeta, Nicole Silva, Kim Spaven, Alexandra Varnerin, Casey Walsh, Joshua Willen and Mackenzie Wood.

Seventy-five students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. Each of the 34 different AP Exams is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and Advanced Placement teachers, ensuring that the exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions. AP scores are accepted by more than 3, 800 colleges and universities worldwide, including more than 90 percent of four-year institutions in the United States. Many of the students listed above have already begun their college studies and have either received credit for their achievement or have bypassed some of the required courses. Roughly20 percent of this year’s honorees are in their junior year and will thus have an additional year in which to earn additional Advanced Placement credits.
