New Officer Joins Brother On Watchung Police Force

Barry Kelly returns to Somerset County from the U.S. Capitol Police, joining his brother on the force.

A Somerset County native has returned to become the newest addition to the Watchung Police Department.

Barry J. Kelly, who grew up in Branchburg, will join his brother William in the department.

“This is a very happy time for the police department,” Mayor Gerald Mobus said at Monday’s Borough Council meeting after Kelly was sworn in. “It’s a very happy time for Watchung.”

The younger Kelly will start on the force on Dec. 15 at an annual salary of $35,000.

The new officer comes to Watchung from Washington, D.C., where he served on the U.S. Capitol Police. Created in 1828, the U.S. Capitol Police officers are responsible for security at the Capitol and protecting members of Congress. Kelly has been a member of the department since 2003 and was a member of its mountain bike patrol.

A graduate of Somerville High School, Kelly will be relocating from Maryland with his wife and 1-year-old son.
