Thieves Targeting Shoppers' GPS Devices

Watchung Police receive multiple reports of thefts.

Three people reported portable GPS units were strolen from their vehicles during visits to Watchung Square Mall in recent weeks.

The first report was made May 13, when a Green Brook resident reported the theft of a GPS, valued at $120, from a 2003 Honda Element parked at the as the victim shopped between 2:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.

The following day, a Mount Pocono, Pa., resident fell victim while shopping at the between 5:50 p.m. and 6 p.m. The GPS unit, valued at $200, was taken from a silver 2007 Toyota sedan.

A third incident was reported May 17, when a Scotch Plains resident reported someone stole a Garmin GPS, valued at $500, from his 2006 Subaru wagon between 9 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. while parked at the Home Depot.

The reports did not note if the vehicles were locked at time of the thefts. Police are investigating the thefts
