'Smash-and-Grab' Thieves Hit During Sandy Outages

Watchung businesses hit by burglars in storm's aftermath.

A string of burglaries at Route 22 businesses that included 14 Green Brook locations and three in Watchung during the power outage after Hurricane Sandy remains under investigation.  

Each of the break-ins involved smashed doors or windows, and businesses reported cash, cash register drawers and merchandise stolen. 

This week, Watchung police released information on three incidents in the borough, including:

  • $1,000 in merchandise taken from the AT&T store, discovered at 3:19 a.m. Nov. 2, after burglars smashed a side door to the store.
  • $700 in a cash register drawer was taken from Ma and Paws, a dog boarding and grooming business. The manager discovered a front door smashed, and said the break-in occurred sometime between 10 p.m. Nov. 4 and 7:32 am. Nov. 5.
  • Wendy's Restaurant reported someone smashed the front door sometime between 8 p.m. Nov. 4 and 9:20 a.m. Nov. 5 and got into the restuarant. Nothing has been reported taken as yet.
