A 23-year-old North Plainfield man was allegedly drunk when his vehicle flipped over on Interstate 78 last month, seriously injuring himself and four passengers, police said Friday.
Julio Maradiaga-Ramirez, 23, of North Plainfield, faces multiple motor vehicle charges and could face additional charges following the .
New Jersey State Police filed DWI charges against Maradiaga-Ramirez, in addition to reckless driving, having an open alcoholic beverage container in a vehicle, failing to wear seat belts and failing to maintain lane charges following the accident.
Police also said the case has been turned over to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office for review, and possible additional charges, pending results of blood tests.
The accident tied up the roadway in the afternoon of Aug. 25, as two people in the Honda Civic required Medivac transport to hospitals because of injuries sustained when the car went off the roadway, hitting trees and flipping over.
Watchung police, fire and Rescue Squad volunteers responded to the accident, providing assistance at the scene.
