Whether you like yours with candy sprinkles or chocolate coating, cake or fried, there are mornings when a doughnut and a cup of coffee is the perfect way to start the day.
Forget about the diet, because today is the day to enjoy a doughnut—June 1 is National Doughnut Day, as celebrated by the Salvation Army beginning in 1938 in tribute to the Salvation Army's volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
The holiday has been picked up by—who else?—Dunkin Donuts in recent years, and the chain is offering a free donut with the purchase of a beverage today—head to the nearest store. Note the promotion is good "while supplies last," so don't wait too long.
The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate National Donut Day; Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free donuts for a year, by entering a contest on its Facebook page. Entenmann's donuts can be found at nearby grocery stores, including , and area convenience stores.
