Out of the Park Hopes Sandy Benefit is a Home Run

New baseball facility on Route 22 in Green Brook holds grand opening on Saturday.

To help baseball players stay in shape year round, Alex Miller has opened Out of the Park, offering batting and pitching/throwing cages and a full range of training activities.

Miller, a Green Brook resident who has been coaching baseball at various levels for more than 20 years, said the facility at 185 Route 22 East in Green Brook was a natural expansion of “a passion I always had. I enjoy training kids and wanted to expand the coaching business.”

Out of the Park is celebrating its grand opening Saturday, giving people an opportunity to learn more about the facility and its offerings while also helping raise funds for those impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can buy tickets to take a swing in the batting cage, clock their pitching skills on a radar gun or visit with Santa. There will also be a bake sale and local businesses have donated baskets and merchandise for an auction. The net proceeds from Saturday’s event will benefit the NJ Relief Fund.

“We wanted to have a grand opening and do it for a good cause,” Miller said.

Miller sees Out of the Park as an ideal way for baseball players to do “off-season training to try to keep in shape and keep pace with athletes in warmer climates” who can play baseball year round.

Teams and players can rent a batting case or the entire facility or just walk in and work out in the pitching/throwing tunnel (with speeds variable for different age groups) or the coin-operated batting cage. Out of the Park will also offer speed and agility classes. A workout room will offer a variety of activities suited for baseball training, such as treadmills, medicine balls, ropes and agility skills.

Skilled trainers/coaches can be hired for individual or group workouts and the facility will be sponsoring its own teams.

There is also a conference room for instructional videos and meetings. Since part of the facility’s philosophy is the importance of “academic upkeep,” Out of the Park will also be offering academic tutoring.

In the coming weeks, Out of the Park will be holding a Winter Camp and Winter Clinic, with sessions for ages 8-12 and 13 and older. Hours will vary by season; Miller plans to open the facility at 3 p.m. while schools are in session.
