Unofficial totals include some of the votes cast at county clerk's office, mail-in ballots.
The current tallies on Watchung voting from Tuesday's general election are below. The tallies have been updated in the local races to include ballots cast trough the county clerk's office under provisions made for voting by email, fax or at the county offices because of Hurricane Sandy. It's important to note the results will not be officials until after the Friday deadline for mail-in ballots. The voting total reflect just 55 percent of Watchung registered voters, an abnormally low turnout for a presidential election. Somerset County Clerk Brett Radi said he believes the difficulties caused by Hurricane Sandy for many families and the ongoing power outage may have suppressed the turnout this year. Ballots outstanding could affect the …

And County Clerk Brett Radi said it could be because of the hurricane.
With only 60 percent of registered voters turning out for this year's presidential election, Somerset County Clerk Brett Radi said his gut feeling is that it was because of the hurricane. "I would have no way to answer other than with my gut," he said. "[In that case] absolutely it has to do with the hurricane." In prior years, Radi said, presidential elections brought out 80 percent of voters, including the last one in 2008. And this year, he said, only 60 percent showed up on Election Day. "And we had some communities where turnout was in the low 50 percent, like the northern communities," he said. "That's not typical of a presidential election." "Many of those areas are without power even today," he added. "I just got mine back Tuesday …

'I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job.'
A day after President Barack Obama earned reelection, Governor Chris Christie dismissed critics who have accused him of bolstering the president during Obama's post-Sandy visit to New Jersey. “I wouldn't call what I did an embrace of Barack Obama," Christie said. "I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job." Speaking to reporters as Winter Storm Athena prepared to batter the already storm-shocked state, Christie was also quick to dismiss speculation of a 2016 presidential run, saying that the life and death issues inherent with back-to-back storms have made politics a minor focus for now. “I've got a job to do in New Jersey. My future, whatever it …

With some races still too close to call, county Republicans got together at the Somerville Elks Club.
Somerset County Republicans came together Tuesday night at the Somerville Elks Club to celebrate election day and the end of their campaigns. For some, like District 7 Congressman Leonard Lance (R), the vote margin by the end of the night was large enough for multiple reports to call the election in his favor. For others, like incumbent Freeholders Patrick Scaglione and Mark Caliguire, as well as District 16 Assemblywoman Donna Simon, their slim leads coupled with provisional and fax or email ballots still to be counted, the victories were still not stamped Tuesday evening. However, each candidate celebrated what they believed to be victories with each other at the Elks Club. "We need to work together in a bi-partisan manor to solve our …

County clerk's office adds to totals, but doesn't change results.
The results aren't officials yet, but tallies released today by the Somerset County Clerk's Office added nearly 100 votes to the total—changing the figures but not the outcome. Under an order issued last week to accommodate voters forced from their homes by Hurricane Sandy, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno directed county clerks to accept mail-in ballots until Friday, meaning additional votes could be added to the figures below. The numbers for the local races are the most up-to-date and include ballots filed at the county clerk's office; figures for county, state and national races are only from yesterday's voting. * denotes incumbent
Scaglione and Caliguire lead with provisional, fax and email ballots outstanding.
Republican incumbents Patrick Scaglione and Mark Caliguire led by a very narrow margin in their quest for new terms on the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders after all precincts were counted in Tuesday's election. However, with provisional and fax or email ballots still to be counted, the race remained too close to call. After Sandy displaced thousands of New Jersey residents, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno signed an order allowing voters to submit a mail-in ballot application by email or fax. That makes things more uncertain than usual at the end of election day. Scaglione received 62,495 votes, or 26.20 percent, and Caliguire received 60,578 votes, or 25.39 percent. Democratic opponents Anthony Pranzateli and William Galtieri were both …
Borough Council members set to return for three more years.
Watchung Borough Council members Thomas Frankin and Debra Joren received 1,541 and 1,537 votes, respectively, making them among the top vote-getters in Tuesday's voting. Both were running unopposed for re-election to three-year terms. The vote tallies represent only the voting today, and does not include the votes cast over the weekend in the special early voting the state permitted this year as many residents were battling power outages following Hurricane Sandy. The total number of votes cast—2,439—represents just 55.8 percent of the borough's 4,365 registered voters. Typically, about 80 percent of Watchung voters turnout for presidential elections, so vote totals will certainly change when added.
Georgia Glasser-Nehls also tapped for school board in second bid.
Voters returned Tiffany Brigante, John Malcow and James Rhyner to the Watchung Borough Board of Education, Tuesday. The three re-elected board members will join Georgia Glasser-Nehls, who filed to complete the unexpired term of Wendy Robinson, which Rhyner had been appointed to fill until the end of the year. Brigante and Malchow had also been appointed to fill unexpired terms of former board members—Brigante joined the board in June, stepping in to complete Shelly Milstein's term, while Malchow joined the board in May, filling the seat of Mary Lou DiRosa. The historic school board voting—the first in November's general election—also included one candidate for one, three-year term on the Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education, Barry …
Voters also fill seats on board of education for the first time in a general election.
Incumbents Pat Boccio and Ken Herrmann rode a strong Republican tide to outpace Democrats David Breen and Tom Tsivgas, and win re-election to the Green Brook Township Committee. Boccio and Herrmann received 1,414 and 1,388 votes, respectively, to Breen's 1,066 and Tsivgas' 1,140 votes. The candidates credited their campaign efforts knocking on doors and meeting residents as the key to their success. "We put our best effort out there and the residents repsonded to that," Boccio said. "In the end, none of us are professional politicians; we're all really in it for the best interests of Green Brook." Herrmann noted the impact Hurricane Sandy had on the campaign, taking away a week of potential door-knocking and putting the incumbents in a …

Been to Newark lately? Would you set up your business there and hire the kids on the street? I didn't think so. Change starts with communication. At least Cory does that. You'd be hard-pressed to find any other politician that does. Newark needs real solutions not outsiders raising their noses and passing the buck.   more ›
