Bridgeport, Conn.–The Somerset Patriots (18-18, 53-53) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (17-16, 48-55) 8-2 Saturday night from Harbor Yard in the second game of this four game weekend series. The Patriots reached the .500 mark for the first time since July 27th.
In the top of the second inning third baseman Jeff Nettles clubbed a two run home run (8) to deep left field to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning first baseman Corey Smith spanked a three run home run (5) over the left field wall to give the Patriots a 5-0 advantage.
The Bluefish got on the scoreboard in the home half of the third inning as shortstop Eddie Rogers hit a RBI double to make the score 5-1.
Somerset added another run in the top of the fourth frame as shortstop Yunesky Sanchez slapped a RBI single through the left side giving the Patriots a 6-1 lead.
Designated hitter Jesse Hoorelbeke hammered a solo home run (15) in the fifth inning over the left field wall as Somerset expanded its lead to 7-1.
Bridgeport scored in the home half of the fifth inning as Rogers once again hit a RBI double as the score was 7-2 in favor of Somerset.
The Patriots added another run in the top of the sixth innings as Nettles recorded a RBI single making the score 8-2 which would be the final.
Gilbert De La Vara suffered his seventh loss of the season as he tossed 4.2 innings while allowing seven earned runs. Justin Cassel threw seven strong innings allowing just two earned runs to earn his fifth win of the year. Cassel has now tossed at least six innings in nine straight starts.
The 2012 Somerset Patriots season will continue on the road until Friday, August 24th when they return home to take on the York Revolution. The game includes 15th Anniversary Back To School Folders (1st 1,500 Kids) and entertainment from the ZOOperstars.
