The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-2 in front of 5,277 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday evening.
The Blue Crabs exploded to score five runs in the top of the first inning highlighted by an RBI single by Brian Barton and a two-run home run by Sergio Pedroza (3).
Southern Maryland tacked on another run the following inning after Kevin Rios scored on a groundout by Casey Benjamin for the 6-0 advantage.
Somerset got on the board in the third after Freddie Bynum tripled and scored on a base hit by Jeff Nettles to make the score 6-1.
The Patriots scored in the bottom of the sixth after Nettles came around to score on a fielder’s choice by Rian Kiniry to make the score 6-2.
Blue Crabs starter Joe Gannon (1-0) got the win after allowing two runs in eight innings pitched. Sean Green (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings of work. The Patriots bullpen stayed strong throughout the game and did not allow a hit for 6.1 innings.
The 2012 Somerset Patriots season will continue on the road until Tuesday, Aug. 7 when they return home to take on the Camden Riversharks. The game features a chance for all fans 21 years and older to win $10,000.
