A Watchung student is being awarded the 2012 Certificate of Excellence for earning top marks in a recent flute assessment, and performed during an award ceremony at Carnegie Hall Saturday.
Katerina Calvo scored top marks in her Grade 1 Flute assessment for the academic year ending in August through the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program.
“A Certificate of Excellence is an exceptional distinction—the result of a student’s hard work, dedication and talent—and a testament to the skill and creativity of the recipient,” said Angela Elster, vice president of The Royal Conservatory, in a release. “Certificate winners represent a national standard of music achievement upheld by support from teachers and parents of music students across America.”
The certificate program also honors music teachers across the United States who train the next generation of artists, the release said. This year's winners included 11 students from Connecticut, 14 students from New Jersey and 24 students from New York.
To receive the award, the release said, students must achieve at least 80 percent on their exams with the conservatory.
