Starting This Memorial Day, Why Not Buy American?

Warren teen launches website featuring products made in the U.S.

It seems the words "Made in China" are ubiquitous, but there are thousands of products manufactured in the U.S.—and Warren resident Connor Gallic wants more people to buy them.

He's collected more than 9,000 American-made products on his Buy American website, which he created with help from his uncle, Dan Gallic. The site features dozens of categories, from Activity Books to Wrenches.

"The purpose of the site is to help American manufacturers get their products out there, and to help American consumers realize that there are plenty of quality goods made here in the USA," Gallic said. "I know that in recent years because of the recession that a lot of companies have decided to move their manufacturing to other countries. Now I realize the benefits of being able to pay less results in less expensive goods—at the same time, the cost of companies...doing that is lots of jobs for my fellow Americans."

Connor noted that the loss of jobs from so much production moving overseas threatens the futures of many people his age, as they complete or leave college and search for work.

If he can help more people buy American, then he may help create a few jobs.

"By making this site I am hoping to help in the tiny way I can stimulate our nation's economy, and give us all a fighting chance in repaying all the debt our country has run up," he added.

He may be well on the way—the site is new, but he's alreday logged more than 5 million page views.

This is Gallic's first business venture, and he recognizes he's taking on some big competition—many times, consumers simply head to Amazon or eBay and purchase the cheapest items that meet their needs.
