Christie: I Did Not Embrace Obama

'I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job.'

A day after President Barack Obama earned reelection, Governor Chris Christie dismissed critics who have accused him of bolstering the president during Obama's post-Sandy visit to New Jersey.

“I wouldn't call what I did an embrace of Barack Obama," Christie said. "I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job."

Speaking to reporters as Winter Storm Athena prepared to batter the already storm-shocked state, Christie was also quick to dismiss speculation of a 2016 presidential run, saying that the life and death issues inherent with back-to-back storms have made politics a minor focus for now.

“I've got a job to do in New Jersey. My future, whatever it is will take care of itself. I'm honored to be the governor of New Jersey,” he said.

The continuing questions about whether Christie had an effect on the Presidential race came one day after he dismissed rumors that he had turned down an opportunity to campaign for presidential Mitt Romney in Pennsylvania.

Appearing at a school in Westwood, he said the story had been spread by "know-nothing, disgruntled Romney staffers who don't like that I said nice things about the President of the United States."

Christie said that he had spoken with Romney before Sandy hit the state last week and that Romney had asked him to join him at an event. Christie told Romney that he would not be able to help if Sandy caused serious damage.

"Those who fear that they may be blamed if things don't go well look for other people to blame," Christie said.

Christie said he had voted for Romney Tuesday morning.

Christie warned Wednesday that Athena could knock out power and cause additional flooding.

“We may take a setback in the next 24 hours. You need to be prepared for that,” Christie said during a press conference at Long Beach Island.

Power outages may increase during the storm, which is set to bring a heavy, wet snow and wind gusts as high as 55 mph to the state.

However, the governor was hopeful the pause in recovery efforts would be brief. He noted 11,000 utility workers remain in the state and the clear weekend forecast would allow the recovery push to continue in earnest.

“I appreciate that we’re all tired,” Christie said. “I want to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”

"I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time" well, there goes another lie!

Christie campaign letter promised 'no harm' to police, firefighter pensions

"The claim that any harm would come to your pension when I'm elected Governor is absolutely untrue. It is a100% lie," Chris Christie wrote to New Jersey law enforcement officers during his campaign against Jon Corzine. The 2009 letter, and a near-carbon copy sent to firefighters, has resurfaced amid Christie's bid to overhaul public servants' pension system.
"Nothing will change for the pensions of current officers, future officers or retirees in a Christie Administration," says the "Open Letter to Members of Our Law Enforcement Community," simply signed "Chris."

"I have repeated time and time again that the pension agreement we made with our member our law enforcement community must be respected," the 2009 letter adds. "It is a sacred trust."

Christie sent a similar "sacred trust" letter to firefighters through the state, adding: "The notion that I would eliminate, change, or alter your pension is not only a lie, but cannot be further from the truth.

"No one will stand up for you more than I will."

"Do not believe the lies that have been spread about my proposals,"Christie told both groups. "Your pension will be protected when I am elected Governor."

melikric....your post is "spot on."

Sounds like Mitt Rummey is either a disgruntled policeman, or, fireman who is now whining because the taxpayers have said "enough" regarding the ridiculous pensions and perks that we as taxpayers have paid for way too long. Reality check....perhaps you (Mitt) should join the private sector in which no rasies have been provided for over 5 years, and the cost of a worker's paycheck deduction for health insurance tops $10,000.00 per year for family coverage. I guess your whining then would significantly increase to a piercing whining.

Mitt I'm not sure if you were a fire or policeman , but either way thank you for your service, and don't believe anyone that tells you they won't mess with your pension, fact is,they already did, money isn't there, it left when industry of all kind left NJ and took their tax dollars with them, and as we are structured now its not coming back, matter of fact its leaving at a higher rate.,, for cheaper and more efficient states todo biz in,,now individuals are leaving as well for the same reason, and just wait til obamacare kicks in and full time employees become part time or fired to so companies can avoid incurring the extra cost, we will collect even less and taxes and therefore fall further behind in pension funding,,full blown disaster,, only way to avoid it is to lower taxes for industry to attract them to NJ to create more jobs to create more taxpayers...

Not knowing much about you or your life experiences, I'll tread carefully.

It would seem that, IF GOVERNOR CHRISTIE IS THE "BEST THING" TO HAPPEN TO NEW JERSEY IN YOUR LIFE-TIME, you are either a minutes-old premature newborn (in a neonatal unit equipped with wi-fi for the babies) using an iPAD to communicate with us OR you're just not spending remotely enough time surveying and fully understanding the devastating effects Christie's administration has wrought on a significant number of critical aspects of NJ LIFE under his weighty, bullying, politically-driven influence.

If its the former, I wish you a long, healthy and progressive-leaning life packed with a great comprehensive education. If its the latter, I urge you to immediately reject and cancel your subscription to The Sarah Palin Current Events Reading Program ("uh ... all of them"), opting instead for an Adult Course in POLITICAL SCIENCE, another course in BASIC TAX LAW and REAL ESTATE VALUES and a quick read of the best-selling book by a prominent former conservative, entitled "HUMAN EMPATHY AND BALANCED PERSPECTIVES: IT'S NEVER TOO LATE FOR THE HARDCORE RECOVERING REPUBLICAN."

I'm pretty sure its now out in paperback so you can save a few bucks and invest those dollars into your Property Tax Escrow Account, where they're surely needed to meet the relentless shortages that occur even though your house is worth less and the services you received have diminished. Matilda, you are so right. If we still had Corzine there is no telling what kind of shape we would be in today and how much debt we would have. Odumbo/Osama does and says whatever he wants to get whatever he wants no matter who gets hurt in the process.

I think the job that Gov.Christie did was better than anyone else has ever done in this state, he has my vote for Gov. again or President. I think he did great asking for help from many other states like Alabama, N.Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Georgia just to mention a few, where would be have been without them, probably still without power yet. What many of the stupid union workers did to the guys who came up from Alabama just shows how ignorant the union workers have become. Calling the scabs just because they weren't unionized was shear stupidity, these guys came here out of the goodness of there hearts to help and then they were treated so rotten. It shows all they care about is themselves and the hell with the residents who pay their salaries when we pay our electric bills each month.

We have been turned into a dictatorship, not by a person but by a political party, the democrats. They have captured the minds of the less fortunate and will keep them below the poverty line. Than they will promise them benefits, etc and they in turn will continue to vote for them. In the old days you emphasized hard work to advance yourself. Today we commend those that don't work or should I say work the system. Well you get the picture.

1 - Christie campaigns for Romney all over the country, even delivering a typically nasty key not address at the convention. At the heart of almost everything Christie talks about is LESS government. Please...can anyone tell me how prohibiting people from purchasing gasoline when the need it is LESS government. It seems Christie thinks government should stay out of our lives unless it's our sex lives, our marriages, or when we buy gasoline. Hypocrisy for the sake of political expedience.
2 - There are two reasons Christie kissed Obama's ring. The first is because he needs billions from the feds (despite being the top supporter of Romney who repeatedly suggested eliminating FEMA and letting states fend for themselves.) Even Christie knows that is simply not possible. The other reason, and the most horrific as it involved using hurricane victims as props, is so he can have lots of footage for his 2016 presidential run when he will attempt to make the case he's a more moderate Republican and will use his photo ops with Obama as proof. Wake up folks...this guy is all hat and no cattle. Why didn't he have gasoline staged and ready BEFORE THE STORM??? He spent five days telling the rest of us to prepare for a monster strom on the coast. You know...where the tankers come in. Yet HE didn't prepare. Instead he waited for Obama to show up to beg for generators to be flown in from CA. Why weren't those here BEFORE the storm? Because he has a 2016 campaign to prepare for. Period.

Showing up doesn't cut it in my book, maybe yours. I think the press is covering Obama's incompetence and so are alot of other people for whatever reason. We should applaud Christie for his efforts regarding this hurricane disaster - not Obama! Shame on our President for not showing up NOW! The election is over.

I'm really sick and tired of all the foolishness. Does it really matter who's the president? No! This is turning into a racist issue. Everyone knows every thing Romany was saying was a lie and during the debates he only agree to doing thing cause he heard President Obama say it. We know the system was screwed up before President Obama was elected. This country gave Bush 8 years when they knew he was screwing things up and we didn't get this much feed back you'll just let him do what he wanted and just dealt with it.
Everything Obama tried to get passed for changed was denied because they knew if the was to agree it would make change but they didn't want him to be praised for the change. So what they do? Deny everything and say hey let's wait till time for re-election, get President Obama out of here allow the republican to come in, then past everything that President Obama brought fourth to make republicans look good.
We as people need to change let's start being true to ourselves and start excepting right is right and wrong is wrong. President Obama didn't take anything from us. Jobs are created by man which can come and go. Until we get out and do things for ourselves and create our own job then with it last. Mitt Romany can't put money in the people's pocket and President Obama can't take anything from us. We are in control of us! Stop putting your lives in the hands of man and take charge of ourselves.
Be blessed!!!!

I don't understand it when you say everything Romney said was a lie. . As far as Bush that is in the past, 4 years ago. As for a racist issue what do you call it when an entire ethnic group votes one way. And when you talk about business you are correct, jobs are created by man however only if business conditions warren it.When you are taxed heavily or your cost is prohibitive you look to other ports to do business and that is what has happened here and will happen under this administration. True Romney can't put money in your pocket but the government can take it out through taxes. What do you think we will be paying for hospitalization. We were had hoped for a decrease instead we received an increase.

Yes! a lie he contradict everything he said. I feel everyone who voted for President Obama did it from there hearts. That's the problem we as people want to over look the 4 years ago when Bush was president and try and blame President Obama for everything. I feel he did a GREAT JOB counting everything they allowed him to do. Don't act like you never put your mind into doing something and once you got started there haven't been set backs that's prohibited you from moving forward to what you've planned. In order for things to run smoothly and the way planned you have to clean house. You can't just patch things up! You have to fix what's broken before moving foward. I believe that's what President Obama was doing for those four years. In the mean time what have you done for yourself instead of trying to gain a pitty party? So what if your taxes will go toward hospitalization. I pay taxes just like you do. I sure when your parent birth you or there parents birth them someone else dollars was used as well. Never forget what is given or gotten can be taken away and you never know if you will have to walk in those shoes.

It is obvious that he's setting himseld up for a 2016 Presidential run. It really started with his speech at the Republican Convention. It was all "Me", "I", "Mine", etc. He spoke about Romney only for a brief moment. If Romney had won, Christie wouldn't be able to run until 2020...and by then he would be out of office, and 'out of site' too long. Now, when 2016 rolls around, he will be still on the people's mind, and he will have a good chance of making it.

Christie is doing a great job helping people out after the storm, but he is, first and foremost, a politician....which doesn't make him a bad person....

The only thing he said that was worse than his slobbering love affair with Obama was his gushing school girl crush on the no-talent human fecal sample, gravel voiced Bruce Springsteen. I would rather listen to fingernails on a chalkboard than that commie-scum's 'music'--puke.

The simple fact that so many liberals, including on this post are supporting Christie highlights, if still needed, which party he helped during the election. Christie is the worst kind for party member. It is normal for members of both parties, democrats or republicans, to campaign for their platform, but to pretend that you are this partisan conservative, speak at the GOP convention, and then backstab the candidate that you said you were supporting 6 days before the election is dishonorable. This, to say nothing of the validity of the compliment, when so many of us are still without water, electricity, gas, and FEMA's office is closed for bad weather! In the end, at best, he only served himself, and perhaps exacted revenge for the VP spot that he didn't get. What a price to pay.

I am an Obama supporter and a loyal Democrat. I am chiming in because I think this situation is FAR beyond the political BS that has been mentioned in some of the comments above. Governor Christie looks like he hasn't slept in two weeks....it's because he probably hasn't gotten a good night sleep in two weeks! He is working his a** off during this disaster. The proof is in the results....NJ is in better shape than NY. Politics doesn't matter. The guy loves NJ, and during this disaster, he's fighting like hell for New Jersey to get back on its feet. There will be plenty of opportunities to criticize his policies...but for now, we owe him a thank you for his efforts.

Oh brother… politicians used to deny that they used drugs or had affairs, now they have to deny that they were actually civil to a member of the opposite party. This is how bitterly divisive our nation has become!

@ Chris Taylor.... after your "political survival guide" we can all shut the hell up now and allow the decent educated spanking to take effect on the dormant minds that for some reason are extremely myopic in their view of real life.

Ron Paul should have been the nominee for the republican party, hahahaha! Maybe then they may have had a chance. Don't be mad @ Christie, Mitt was not the right choice for the party.

If the comments in this stream represent the average mindset of our nation, we are in deep doo doo!! I never could understand how you could be so hateful towards people you don't know and will most likely never meet. I voted for the person I felt most suited for the job; maybe he won and maybe he didn't but now that doesn't really matter. We must support OUR President of the US whoever he is because he represents--period. And we must treat that position with the dignity and respect it deserves, and as the leader of the free world no matter who holds it. We as a nation have to do better--we just have to. God Bless America and God Bless these United States!
